Year 6 Guest Speaker
Year 6 was fortunate to have Roland, a 92-year-old veteran, who shared his remarkable experiences during World War II. He vividly recalled his time at school, where the sound of bombs dropping created an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty. Roland described the harrowing events he witnessed at Marlborough Harbour, as well as the anguish of having his father captured as a prisoner of war by the Germans. As an evacuee in Wales, UK, he experienced the challenges of being separated from his family. Additionally, he recounted the significant events of D-Day, where the Allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy to fight against the Nazi regime. Roland also shared the exhilarating feeling of Victory in Europe (VE) Day, a moment that symbolised hope and relief after years of conflict. His stories provided a deep insight into the realities of war and the resilience of those who lived through it.
